 Uncle 5

Introduction of the founder of this Bamboo Park: Artist Wu Hanguang (a.k.a. Goh Ang Kuan, PhD.).

Wu Hanguang (Goh Ang Kuan) was born in a house built near a river bank overgrown with bamboos at Kampung Peng Long, Taiping, Perak, Malaysia. Later, his whole family moved into a run-down house inside an isolated rubber plantation in Matang Jebong.

His father, Wu Jinxing (Wu Xing), was a well known calligrapher in Hong Kong during his time. His mother, Zhang Jingxian, was a housewife. His older brother, Wu Hanling (a.k.a. Hanxuan), is presently operating a bean curd business in Matang.

When he was very young, his family was extremely poor. They ate only sweet potatoes day and night to appease their hunger. He had no pre-school education. Starting from four years old, his mother used old newspapers borrowed from friends to teach him to recognise characters and read during the night under the dim light of a kerosene lamp.

By five years old, he fell in love with drawing. As he could not afford to buy papers and pencil, he improvised and used the sandy open space inside the rubber plantation as paper and twig as pencil. This was the first step towards his drawing career.
At the age of six, his father suddenly decided to teach him the art of calligraphy. His father used old newspapers as teaching materials and he managed to write his own name. Unfortunately, his father passed away that year on the twelfth of the final lunar month.
He started formal schooling at the age of seven. Everyday, he had to walk on muddy roads for at least an hour to reach his school, that is, Khea Wah Chinese Type Primary School in Matang. During primary school days, he was always among the winners in the drawing and Chinese calligraphy competitions.
When he was fourteen years old, his mother collapsed due to exhaustion. After a short illness, she also eventually passed away. After the passing of his mother, he and his brother only had each other to depend on for support.
As a young man, even though he had lost both his parents, he did not give up on life or mingle with the wrong people. Conversely, he persisted to complete his education by working part time to self finance himself.

When he finally entered into the real world, he made full use of his self-taught skills and went into the artistic industry. He had produced countless art pieces in the advertising sector and also participated in painting exhibitions. He also got involved in the international artistic arena and produced comic series. He had gone further by self-directing movies and he had actually made a name for himself as a self-directed comedian.

Drawing skill is no longer his only forte. He had acquired two and three-dimensional sculpting skill that is renowned in and outside the country. He immersed himself in the artistic arena and interacted with the international artistic community through comic series. In addition, he demonstrated his extraordinary talent by using both hands simultaneously to draw and he had been well known for this in more than twenty countries. At the same time, he had also demonstrated using both hands, both feet and mouth to draw three-dimensional and five-dimensional art pieces.

His art pieces had always incorporated his deep understanding of the meaning of life. In the year 2000, he met up and established a close friendship with Master Peng from Singapore. Under the immense power of Bodhisattva Guan Zizai, he started to build a relationship with Buddhism. He strongly believed that Bodhisattva Guan Zizai would protect him from his illnesses. According to Master Peng, Bodhisattva Guan Zizai originated from Thailand. However, what was remarkable was that Master Peng was very gracious and willingly allowed him to bring the statue of Bodhisattva Guan Zizai back to Malaysia. Hence, the statue of Bodhisattva Guan Zizai was brought to Selangor first. At the time, as he was busy preparing to undergo a surgery, he did not immediately bring out the statue to worship. He left the statue inside a paper box. Little did he realize, the statue had since been left in the paper box for nineteen years. During those years, the statue of Bodhisattva Guan Zizai had been to the Guanyi Cave in Ipoh, the Pundut Chinese Cemetery in Lumut and the Taiping Hokkien Association Columbarium.
After nineteen years of not being worshipped, in the spring of 2019, there was intention to send the statue of Bodhisattva Guan Zizai to Vietnam. However, there was a ray of light laid by Bodhisattva Guan Zizai and a beautiful scene appeared before his eyes and it looks just like the one that you can now see in this Bamboo Park. Alas, a decision was made to let the statue remain to protect the people here.

Goh Ang Kuan, PhD., was born and bred in Taiping, Perak. His hometown is Taiping. He wanted to transform the Bamboo Park in his hometown into a painting that generates positive energy to shine upon everyone’s life and to bring good luck to them.

Goh Ang Kuan, PhD., also pointed out that visitors are fated to be here and everlasting ray of light from Bodhisattva Guan Zizai will bless you and your family with good health, perfect happiness and peace to body and soul.
